Water Fasting

My introduction to fasting came to me when I took part in a 10-day water fast 15 years ago.  This was my initial inspiration for using fasting as a healing and healthy activity. My subsequent learning about fasting has come through my own experience which includes  10 years routine seasonal fasts. Moreover, in the last 7 years, I have held retreats to support people through their own fasting.

My personal and professional realization is that fasting encourages the body to heal and repair itself!

I am creating a retreat Centre opening 2021 where I will hold these fasting holidays.  This, I am very excited about.

My fasting retreats will offer:

  • Small groups so individual needs can be honoured.
  • Comfortable outdoor living in our field and forest garden with dwelling in yurts and other low impact structures. 
  • Water or juice fasts depending on individual needs. They will also be at least 3-5 days as this period of time is necessary for the body to enter a different metabolic state (i.e. ketosis).
  • A biophilic approach; recognizing that being part of a healthy natural environment is one of the best portals to our own nature and healing. 
  •  I use a simple natural approach with an emphasis on nurture, where, yoga,  sauna, and bodywork treatments are part of the daily routine.  There are plenty of opportunities to rest and restore.
  •  You will be well supported and nurtured during this transformative time.

“This is my second fasting retreat with Claire and Richard, in their healing sacred space in Devon Heaven.  I had less fear this time and responded to the fasting process more quickly.  I had so much more buzzing energy on days 3 and 4, waking up at dawn and walking up the big hill, amazed at so much energy I had without food! A highlight was watching the sunset behind the one tree on ‘One tree hill’.  Another highlight was sitting by the fire on the last evening with the lovely mix of people laughing, chatting and singing.  Also paddling in Holly stream and feeling the spirit of the trees by myself.

“I found the first 2 days fairly easy, my energy levels were quite high and I enjoyed the interaction with nature and the peaceful surroundings.

My experiences with the yurt were mixed, I did love the outdoor nature especially the ability to ‘open’ the roof and the cozy fire which I enjoyed lighting every night, but struggled with the ingress of rather too many eager insects who wanted to share the space with me!

By the third and fourth days I was feeling very weak and dizzy and so took to my bed, the treatments were a lifesaver and a highlight of each day and Claire, Richard and Chrisha were all really kind, supportive and caring as I turned into a total quivering wreck as the time went on- I marvel at their patience!

In the months since the fast I have noticed a closer awareness of what foods my body feels good after eating and what foods it feels bad after eating. At first I could not even consider anything sweet or fatty and craved clean healthy foods, brown rice and vegetables, with time I have have managed to stomach some chocolate on occasions!!

I would say that even now the better diet has persisted ( 4 months on ). Also my bowels are much happier with the higher fibre diet and I get less stomach pain and bloating.
All in all it was a positive experience and physically I have benefitted from it.”

  • Fasting

    There’s hidden sweetness in the stomach’s emptiness.
    We are lutes, no more, no less. If the soundbox

    If the brain and belly are burning clean
    with fasting, every moment a new song comes out of the fire.
    The fog clears, and new energy makes you
    run up the steps in front of you.

    When you fast, good habits gather like friends who want to help.
